509th Bomb Wing

The 509th Bomb Wing, stationed at Whiteman Air Force Base in Missouri, is one of only two Air Force units to operate the B-2 Spirit stealth bomber. From the heartland of America, the wing can launch global combat missions using conventional and precision-guided munitions.

The B-2’s combat capabilities were first demonstrated during Operation Allied Force in 1999, supporting air operations over Serbia and Kosovo. Following the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, B-2 bombers from Whiteman became the first U.S. aircraft to enter Afghan airspace during combat operations against Taliban and Al Qaeda forces.

Flying nonstop missions directly from Missouri, these historic sorties lasted more than 40 hours, demonstrating the unmatched reach, precision, and endurance of the 509th Bomb Wing and its Airmen.
